Daniel Hillier fired a nine-under par 62 to surge into contention heading into the final day of the latest European Challenge Tour event in Spain.

The Kiwi golfer’s stunning third-round at the Challenge Costa Brava was the best of the field and catapulted him to 13-under overall, two shots behind leader Ricardo Gouveia of Portugal.

Italian Matteo Manassero was second at 14-under.

Hillier got off to a blistering start with an albatross on the par-five second. He went on to make eight birdies, including the final hole after dropping his only shot of the day on the 17th.

Hillier is on track to qualify for the top-45 season ending tour finals, with a chance to secure a full European Tour card for next season.

Meanwhile, fellow New Zealander Amelia Garvey made a good start to the second stage qualifying tournament for the LPGA Tour.

The recently-turned pro shot a two-under 70 to be tied for 17th after the first round in Venice, Florida.

Garvey is aiming to finish among the top 45 players and ties after four rounds to advance to the final LPGA Q-Series tournament in Alabama starting at the end of November. She had three birdies and one bogey in her round, which left her three shots off the lead held by young French star Pauline Roussin-Bouchard.

Daniel Hillier produced the best score of the third round at the Challenge Costa Brava.
