CJ:
Hey Dan, I appreciate you taking the time to chat today mate. You’ve been in fine form across the ditch on the Australasian Tour over the last few weeks.. are you happy with where the game is at mate?
Daniel Hillier:
Yeah it’s been a fun few weeks out here in Victoria. I’ve played some really good golf, just haven’t quite been able to string four rounds together yet. It’s been great being in the mix a couple of times so far though and hopefully I can continue to put myself in contention over the next couple of events.
CJ:
Good stuff mate it’s been great following along the results. You must be pleased to be back out on tour.. travelling and competing. What’s your experience been like moving around Australia with the covid pandemic? Anything to report on there?
Daniel Hillier:
Yeah it’s been awesome getting back overseas and competing against these strong fields on some great courses. I think the situation we were in last year with the pandemic has definitely helped me appreciate being able to get back out here and compete. I’ve found I’m putting less pressure on myself and I’m enjoying the ups and downs that come with competitive golf a lot more than I might have been a year or so ago. We have been pretty lucky so far in regards to the pandemic, getting through 4 weeks of golf without a hiccup. Unfortunately there has recently been a small outbreak which forced Victoria into lockdown again, but we were able to get to NSW before that came into effect.
CJ:
It’s great that you were able to form that perspective and turn the covid situation into a positive learning experience.
So you turned professional in September of 2019 and you’ve amassed some great success to add to your impressive amateur resumé, there’s been so many but what’s been the highlight for you since entering the professional ranks?
Daniel Hiller:
It’s really hard to pick one moment. But a couple that stand out would be the KLM Open which was my first European Tour event and first event as a pro, and the super 6’s at Manawatu, which was my first Charles Tour win as a pro and my first since the Harewood Open four and a half years earlier.
CJ:
And who could forget the come from behind victory last year at the DVS pegasus open and claim the season long Jennian Homes Trophy. Certainly no stranger to some silverware!
So where in the world are you at the moment and what is coming up for you? Are you coming back for the NZPGA Pro Am circuit & Charles Tour or staying over in Australia?
Daniel Hillier:
Haha yeah I’ve been fortunate enough to get over the line a couple of times this past year, and that definitely gave me some confidence heading into these Australasian Tour events. I’m currently in New South Wales with Luke and Mike. Luke and I have a couple of Pro-ams over the next couple of weeks to keep us match fit for TPS Sydney and the Queensland Open and Mike is due to head home shortly. Unfortunately I’ll miss out on the first few events back home as I’ll be grinding out my two week isolation from March 17th, but will hopefully be able to play a couple in April.
